Do I need a permit? – Most work that alters or impacts the hydraulic capacity of a drainageway will typically require a District Permit. Common examples include culvert installation or replacements, drain tile installation, or the construction or repair of a levee. Why do I need to apply for a permit? – Permits are necessary so that the Board is kept informed of planned work, can advise Permit applicants and, in some cases, provide assistance, and to ensure that land disturbing work and development occurs in an orderly manner and in accordance with the Watershed Management Plan.
Do I need a permit from other entities or agencies? – Yes, in most cases the MSTRWD is not the only permitting entity that permission should be sought from. The SWCD, NRCS, County Highway Departments and some Townships may also require a permit prior to any work occurring. Simply obtaining a permit from the MSTRWD does not relieve the applicant of the obligation to obtain any other authorizations as may be required by law.
Do I need to contact anyone besides the District about my application? – Yes, MSTRWD Rules require affected parties to be notified about the work you are proposing to do. This may include downstream neighbors or the local road authority (Ex: Township, County, MNDOT). In some cases, the Board may require signatures or approval from affected parties before approving your application.
